NEOGEO Handheld Games Console Officially Announced

Tommo Inc and BLAZE set to release Limited Edition NEOGEO Handheld for Worldwide sale Q2 2O12

The “NEOGEO X” will be released in Q2 2012 following the 20th anniversary of the ground breaking NEOGEO AES console. This Limited Edition handheld console will feature 20 officially licensed NEOGEO games including retro classics such as METALSLUG, THE KING OF FIGHTERS and FATAL FURY.

Along with these 20 built in NEOGEO classic titles, the NEOGEO X will also feature, SD card expansion, a 3.5” LCD screen, A/V output, internal stereo speakers and a headphone socket.

Wasn't this originally teased ~6 months ago? Anyway, this mostly looks like a Dingoo with a Neo Geo logo slapped on it. The list of games looks like it was chosen to maximize the number of games that could be fit into cheap onboard flash storage. They get that the Neo-Geo brand still has relevance to some people, but they have no idea why.

Some pictures were released or leaked, but IIRC SNK released a statement saying it wasn't a real thing. If you're conspiracy-minded you might think it was a deliberate leak by the hardware makers to gauge interest during license negotiations or something. But yeah, it's probably the same hardware as Blaze's GameGadget with a different control layout.

If it's cheap and the emulation is accurate enough it might be an interesting toy (esp. if you can just put ROMs on an SD card), but there isn't really anything you can't get form a Dingoo or similar handheld except maybe better distribution. I wonder how many GPL violations it will come packed with?
