AMEBA a new saturn game !

I'm looking forward to Ameba as I don't own a Dreamcast, otherwise I would be equally excited over Xenocider :p. So I imagine you're planning on releasing these commercially, well best of luck to you! I know there have been some commercial releases for the Dreamcast in recent years. Of course the dreamcast is much easier to bypass the *cough* security *cough* if you could even call it that XD so I'm interested to see how you're going to achieve it on the Saturn though. Maybe disc splicing could work (like the old gameshark discs for the ps1/ps2) where you would somehow splice your disc (using precision machinery of course, that would be damn near impossible to do by hand lol) with an original saturn disc (something cheap lol) and get it the two security rings/layers to line up perfectly. That's gonna take some pretty heavy duty and not to mention expensive equipment to pull off though. Perhaps a "boot cartridge" would be the most cost effective way. It will be interesting to see what your team comes up with though :). I'll be keeping an eye on this project, keep up the good work!

Even though we are still exploring other alternatives, we think a custom cartridge is the best option for several reasons. It's the most cost-efficient, it's convenient for both the team (development and manufacturing wise) and the player (no need for mods or disc-swapping or whatever), and we can offer support because it's not just "some" cartridge but our own, with our content we made ourselves, most probably exclusive to the game.

That being said, we'll see ;)

I heard if you ask the Saturn nicely, it will play whatever you want including ps4 and Wii u games without any mods/exploits ;), lol if only....

Best of luck to you and your team though!

We just came back to our homes after reuniting in Madrid for an intensive work weekend, mainly focused on turning Xenocider on a more complete, playable (and re-playable) experience. We all live in different cities, so we keep each other updated via Skype or Hangouts and do regular video-meetings when we are done with our jobs, which usually means quite late at night. But once in a while, meeting and testing things in person is worth the trip...

Lots of updates, learn more here!

Xenocider really looks great on DC and i´m sure it will happen, but being realistic AMEBA is dead on Saturn, i think it only was an idea. Sadly this tend to happen on Saturn developments, Sonic Jump and Sonic Z-treme are good examples of this.

I've been out of the loop for a bit, Z-treme was abandoned?

The engine isn't abandonned, but I gave up on Sonic Z-Treme. It wasn't my initial intention to go ahead with that project and the reaction for the Sage 2018 demo convinced me to drop it.
But I made heavy changes to the engine for a future fps game, but the whole thing is way more complex so it takes time.

Looking the positive side, Z-treme is a great tech demo and the biggest homebrew proyect on Saturn, imo. It is more than Xtreme was on Saturn and it was easy to dream with a 3D plataformer Sonic at the end.
In the other hand, the FPS proyect you are now focused, how bigger will be compared Ztreme?, i use to read and follow all your posts and its stunning the things you want to achieve with the console.
Thanks for this in advantage.

We are getting a but off topic, so I apologize for that. In terms of tech, it's like Saturn Quake, like full 3d, but I'm using different rendering techniques (relying on a pvs for occlusion culling, not clearing the framebuffer, and like in Sonic Z-Treme using a auto-generated LOD model) from Lobotomy (which used portals ) to achieve good results (maybe 700-800 rendered quads with gouraud shading on everything, 32x32 textures). But it is really way more complex than Sonic Z-Treme and I will need to work on things I never worked on such as Artificial Intelligence.
So it's going to take a while before I have some gameplay to show.

Hey @XL2, that's even more off-topic but if you're full of Z-Treme project, then how about releasing its source ?
That would be a chance for the people who wanted X, Y and Z features to be implemented, and they eventually would notice how hard it is to do software development on Saturn ;)
If you don't want to release Z-Treme sources, I respect your choice and in that case it is fine to ignore this post rather than going on into lengthy discussions.
